Vic; Commonwealth slashes heritage funding, says Victorian govt

The Victorian government says the Commonwealth has slashed the state's funding forthe National Heritage Trust, in what amounts to a massive cut in support for the environment.

Environment Minister JOHN THWAITES says Victoria today signed a bilateral agreementwith the Commonwealth.

But he's disappointed that funding this year is less than half last year's at $14 million, compared with $38 million.

He says the reduction in Commonwealth funding will jeopardise plans for land care, and coastal and river protection.

But he says the state government will press for more federal money.

Mr THWAITES also says a new scheme whereby Victoria has to bid against other statesfor a share of a pool of $17-25 million is adding insult to injury.

Comment is being sought from federal Environment and Heritage Minister DAVID KEMP.
